AMAZING
1st TRUFFLE FRIES
Kebap with Attitude, Berlin
Let me start by saying truffles are overused. A cliche of mid tier dining… but this is a wonderful exception where the truffle is perfectly balanced and exists to complement the dish. The truffle is neither overdone or over prominent and works so well in the creamy, and almost smoky, sauce adorning the perfectly cooked french fries. The element that pushes this over to the top are the pomegranate seeds. They added flavor is fairy negligible but the bite and visual appeal is great on the plate and seems like a creative solution to fixing this otherwise gray goop plate.
2nd FRIES
Lovely's Old Fashioned, New York
As a French fry connoisseur, I can safely say these are top tier. The spiral cut is a rare find, but perfectly executed. Wonderful bite from the fried exterior, and the interior is somehow both fluffy and meaty. Not overly greasy, but definitely not trying to be healthy. Great fries here!
PRETTY GOOD
3rd BACON CHEESE FRIES
12:51 By Chef James Cochran, London
The fries themself were cooked well and the bacon was crisp but not overdone. The unfortunate bit was that the cheese sauce was so liquid and thin that it sat at the bottom of the basket and barely imparted any flavor to the fries. A thicker cheese sauce throughout would elevate this instantly to a really nice side. For now, they’re just fine.
NOT FOR ME
5th POUTINE
Lord of the Fries-Cuba Street, Wellington
This tastes exactly how it looks. How this business has multiple locations and has customers is beyond me. These “gravy” of these poutine fries were watery and flavorless. I might as well have been eating water splashed fries and worn brown tinted glasses. In theory, the spice from the hot sauce could be a nice contrast to the richness of the cheese and gravy, but it also felt thin and flavorless. The fries themselves were on the bottom rung of decent (note that as a fry fanatic, this is the worst I can rank a French fry). SKIP.
