AMAZING
1st CHARCOAL CINNAMON SUGAR SOURDONUT
basket break bakehouse, Petaling Jaya
Unfilled charcoal brioche donut dusted in cinnamon sugar. This is the perfect example of how you don’t always need complicated or fancy toppings to make something Amazing. It’s a simple nut, but it’s so good. You need to warm this one up to fully enjoy it. (Actually please do try and warm up all of their sourdonuts before you consume. It’s so good that way). The exterior crisps up ever so slightly, giving way to a soft but pleasurably chewy sourdonut. The taste is more complex than a regular yeasted doughnut. There’s a slight tang from the sourdough and the cinnamon sugar seems to enhance that. It’s really, really good.
REALLY GOOD
2nd MAPLE ALMOND CRUNCH BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Heavenly! Sugar and I are currently our favourite place for bombolonis. The dough is just so soft and pillowy and they are so generous with the filling. I was almost afraid of breaking the bomboloni when I lifted it out of the box. Gently, gently does it!
4th KAYA PANDAN BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Pandan infused dough stuffed with rich kaya. And then the good folks at Sugar and I decided that’s not enough and so they jabbed a little stick of salted butter into the bomboloni. Mind you, that butter goes all the way down the bomboloni. So you get a bite of sweet kaya which is contrasted by the salty butter. Kinda genius.
5th KUNAFA PISTACHIO BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
“A rich pistachio filling with crispy kunafa crunch.” No prizes for guessing where Sugar and I got the inspiration for this from. Loved the contrasting textures of the crunchy kunafa and the pillowy soft dough. Hated that I had to share this. Pfft.
6th TIRAMISU BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Kuala Lumpur
Coffee-infused dough with a filling of rich mascarpone cream and a pipette of arabica coffee for that extra shot of caffeine. Loved it. I hope they don’t take this off the menu!
7th HONEY CORNFLAKES BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Doughnut meets honey cornflakes cookies. Favouritest of this batch of seasonal specials!
8th RED VELVET RASPBERRY CHEESE BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Happy Valentine’s Day! I tried to be fancy and eat with a fork. Silly idea. Much more satisfying to bite into it and have raspberry cream all over my fingers and face.
10th SAMBAL IKAN BILIS
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Limited Time only for Merdeka and Malaysia Day. The OG. SnI’s version of our local favourite Burger Malaysia. This has always been a favourite at the kueh stalls.
11th TUNG KU KAI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Limited Time only for Merdeka and Malaysia Day. Savoury bomboloni with Chinese braised chicken and mushroom. Very tasty!
12th CHICKEN MASALA
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Limited Time only for Merdeka and Malaysia Day. SnI decided to come up with a limited time only Merdeka box, featuring 3 bomboloni inspired by Malay, Chinese and Indian flavours. All very good.
13th VANILLA BEAN BOOLEE SOURDONUT
basket break bakehouse, Petaling Jaya
Filled with vanilla bean creme pat and topped with torched housemade marshmallow. We first discovered Basket Break during the pandemic when they were selling sourdonuts online from their home. They were good then, but we felt that the nutz could do with a bit of tweaking. Happy to see that they’ve managed to get a physical space now and their sourdonuts are even better than before!
14th MONSTER COOKIES BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Stuffed with a mixture of chocolate and their signature Belgian chocolate chip cookies. Wow, this was just delicious. Bite into that soft, fluffy dough and be rewarded with crunchy cookie bits swimming in thick, rich chocolate. Oy... my waistline cries.
15th NIKO NEKO MATCHA BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Strictly for matcha lovers. This is not one of those mild or delicate or “a hint of matcha” kinda flavour 😉.
16th LEMON GHOSTIE SOURDONUT
basket break bakehouse, Petaling Jaya
Their bestselling lemon curd cream sourdonut topped with a meringue ghostie. Spookified for the Halloween season. Also, my friends… I love you and I know you all know that my love for doughnuts is beyond legendary, but please… y’all gotta stop sending me doughnuts. This bear is starting to look as round as one already! 😅
17th LOTUS BISCOFF BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
I love biscoff and on any other day I would be swooning over this. It is so good, but today this was overshadowed by the Monster Cookies. Nice try Lotus Biscoff.
18th CARAMEL PUDDING BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Two desserts in one. Sounds like a good idea to me.
19th MANDARIN YUZU
Nareo, Petaling Jaya
With some stabby-stabby action. New doughnut shop and apparently one of the founders worked 7 years in a well-known doughnut shop in Australia. Lucky us.
21st CRIME SCENE BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Cookies and cream filling. It’s that time of the year when doughnuts run amok.
22nd BLOOD & GUTS BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Crème brûlée glaze and custard filling. It’s a bloody mess.
23rd CHUNKY BISCOFF MOUSSE DOUGHNUT
APRONFOOLS, Subang Jaya
Not a flattering picture but a really good doughnut! Soft and fluffy and the biscoff filling was delicious!
24th NUTELLA MOUSSE FILLED DOUGHNUT
APRONFOOLS, Subang Jaya
There was so much filling in this doughnut that it was all over my face by the time I was done with it. Ok maybe slight exaggeration. But it did get messy (in a good way!) Also, I’m loving my handmade plate from Clay Expression 😁.
25th NAMA DONUT GULA MELAKA
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
What you get when a Malaysian kuih (keria gula melaka) and a Japanese doughnut (nama doughnut) have a baby. The result is a soft, pillowy dough that has sweet potato added into it and topped with a gula melaka glaze after it’s cooked.
PRETTY GOOD
26th KUIH BAKAR BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Much as I love my doughnuts, I think in the case I much prefer the traditional kuih bakar. Still worth a try though.
27th ALMOND BOUGHSTOCK
HALO, Petaling Jaya
Baked aged doughnut with crème d’amande and almond flakes.
28th BOO BERRY
HALO, Petaling Jaya
Balsamic, mint and blueberry glaze with eyeball candy.
29th TARO ATTAPCHEE
Sourbombe Bakery - Wisma Atria, Singapore
A bit on the fence with this one. It’s not offensive, but it wasn’t a love-at-fist-bite kinda situation as well. It did grow on me after a few chomps but with so many flavours to choose from, this would not have been my first choice.
30th BUTCHER’S KNIFE BOMBOLONI
Sugar and I, Subang Jaya
Belgian chocolate filling. Possessed. Also might I add, it was bold of Sugar and I to colour the topping this shade of cement gray 😅.
