REALLY GOOD
1st WILD BOAR CURRY RICE
Restaurant Sing Kee Wong, Petaling Jaya
:: Lots of curry powder, spices and curry leaves makes this a really, really good wild boar dish to have with rice. Be warned, you’ll probably need a nap after this so cancel all appointments if you intend to have this for lunch.
2nd NASI DAGANG WITH GULAI RAJA BERANGKAT
Kesom Cafe, Petaling Jaya
Special brown rice steamed with herbs and coconut, served with acar, keropok, hardboiled egg and sambal belacan. This one also came with ikan tongkol (mackerel tuna if I'm not mistaken) that has been cooked in a coconut-y gravy. We found pieces of pineapple in the gravy as well, which added a slight tanginess to the dish. Very appetizing.
3rd NASI KERABU WITH GULAI AYAM KAWAH
Kesom Cafe, Petaling Jaya
Basmati rice steamed with Butterfly Pea Flower (Clitoria Ternatea) for the flavour and colour and served with acar (vegetable pickles), keropok (fish crackers), telur masin (salted egg), kerisik (toasted grated coconut), serunding ikan (fish floss), ulam (a mixture of raw local vegetables and herbs) and sambal belacan. I picked the ayam gulai kawah (chicken cooked in a gravy similar to curry) to go with this. One of my favourite places to eat.
4th BANANA LEAF RICE MEAL
Vanakam Kitchen, Petaling Jaya
One of the best BLR in town. Rice served with the day’s selection of vegetables, papadum and your choice of curry. Everything is cooked fresh daily so you’ll never know what you will get until you are there. Regardless, it’ll still be good and you can tell that Chef Vela really enjoys his job. Don’t plan anything for the rest of the day though. You’re likely to go into a food coma after lunch 😅.
5th BANANA LEAF RICE
Aunty Manju's Home Of Banana Leaf, Kuala Lumpur
Very decent BLR here. The tofu sambal that they serve with the meal is good! More often than not, restaurants usually only serve vegetables with their BLR sets. Props to Aunty Manju’s for offering that with the set instead of charging extra! Word of caution, this will likely put you into a food coma so try not to schedule anything important after your BLR meal, k? 😉
7th SOY BOWL FRIED OYSTER MUSHROOM
Choo Choo Chicken Puchong, Puchong
Those king oyster mushrooms were really well done. They were juicy and tender and yet so crispy on the outside. This is perfect for non-meat eaters!
8th BANANA LEAF RICE
Uncle Mani's Banana Leaf Restaurant - Taman Megah, Petaling Jaya
Basic set that comes with rice, 4 types of vegetables, papadum, rasam, pickles, dried chillies and your choice of curry (vegetarian option available). I enjoyed the thick fish curry gravy with an additional order of tairu (Indian yogurt) to cut the spicyness and richness of the curries. Food coma inducing.
9th CURRY CHICKEN RICE
I-Tea House 爱-茶室 (Aunty Lan Sarawak Deli), Petaling Jaya
It’s such a simple dish. Slices of charsiew and chicken laid over rice and drowned with thick, delicious curry. So fuss-free and yet so damn tasty. It’s going to be hard for me to choose between this and the Sarawak laksa next time.
10th VEGETARIAN BANANA LEAF RICE
Restoran Devi's Corner, Petaling Jaya
Quite good BLR here. The mint chutney and pickles were especially enjoyable. Curry and dhal was good too. I do feel that BLR sometimes can be a hit or miss and much of it depends on the vegetables that are served for the day. Thankfully for us everything was a hit on the day we went.
11th NASI KERABU
Cafe Chef Wan @ TTDI, Kuala Lumpur
“Nasi ‘Bunga Talang’, coconut serunding, kerabu aneka and ulam desa, comes with sambal and budu, ikan kering, salted egg and fish crackers.” Comes with an option of ayam percik or beef rendang Selangor. We picked the chicken (ayam percik) which was good. Only thing is we would have loved more ulam with this.
PRETTY GOOD
12th NASI KERABU AYAM GORENG
Kesom Cafe, Petaling Jaya
Last few days to enjoy this before they close for good. The fried chicken was really good, as always. And I love how they are always generous with the raw local vegetables and condiments that go with this butterfly pea flower rice. They will be missed.
13th GARLIC RICE
Rakuzen @Empire Shopping Gallery, Subang Jaya
This was tasty enough but garlic rice is low on my list of things to order in a Japanese restaurant. This went well with the beef dish.
14th GRAVY RICE (MUN FAN)
Big Big Wantan Mee Rice Damansara Jaya, Petaling Jaya
Essentially rice covered with an egg gravy with vegetables and meat. This portion can easily feed 2 small eaters. The plate it came on was humongous! Plus it’s also quite wallet-friendly at RM8. Win.
15th GINGER ONION PORK RICE
Big Big Wantan Mee Rice Damansara Jaya, Petaling Jaya
Tasty, and very generous portion. Had to minus some points because there was slightly too much velveting on the pork slices.
16th BANANA LEAF RICE
Restoran Bigg Papadam, Puchong
We were here really late for lunch, close to 3pm. Definitely feel that the food would be better had we been earlier so this is partly on us.
17th TROPICAL CHICKEN BOWL
Nando's Paradigm Mall, Petaling Jaya
Grilled chicken tenders, grilled pineapple, fresh edamame and red (or yellow in this case) peppers served on spicy rice. You will need some peri-peri sauce with this.
