AMAZING
1st CHESTNUT MILK
KAKIYUKI @ Taman Paramount, PJ, Petaling Jaya
Love this shaved chestnut milk icy dessert! Not too sweet and not at all bland, despite its rather monotonous colour scheme. When you start digging into that soft, fluffy ice, you’ll start finding bits of candied chestnuts. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find walnut ‘soil’ which adds that little bit of crunch in your spoonful. Definite reorder for me.
2nd THAI TEA KAKIGORI
After You Dessert Cafe, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon
Absolutely loved this. There were some pieces of toast inside as well, which soaked up some of the melted shaved ice. Everything in this bowl was pretty much on point for me. Wish I didn’t have to share 🙄.
REALLY GOOD
3rd D24 DURIAN
KAKIGŌRI the Gardens Mall, Kuala Lumpur
What do you get when you take a mountain of rich, fluffy shaved chocolate ice, fill it with a decadent D24 durian espuma, cover that with some cocoa powder and a drizzling of Belgium chocolate sauce, top it with MORE D24 durian espuma and then sprinkle some sugar granules on said espuma, torch it till it’s all nice and caramelized and crackly? A freaking glorious bowl of icy goodness. That’s what you get. G-L-O-R-I-O-U-S.
4th THE PRINCESS KAKIGORI
KAKIYUKI @ Taman Paramount, PJ, Petaling Jaya
“Bright Green marzipan espuma, creamy dreamy vanilla milk, bright red tarty raspberry jam, and lots of almonds and elderflower jelly inside.” Oh how I love this kakigori! That combination of the sweet espuma and the tart raspberry was divine. If only it was on the permanent menu... 😭
5th ELDERBERRY & ELDERFLOWER ESPUMA
KAKIYUKI @ Taman Paramount, PJ, Petaling Jaya
Very refreshing mix of tart and sweet. The ice is so finely shaved and delicate that it just poofs away in your mouth leaving behind an icy-cold deliciousness.
6th BERRY VERY MUCH
Kooky Cream, Petaling Jaya
Mixed berries ice bowl with raspberry pudding cubes. Instant brain freeze but it was worth it 😁.
7th MANGO TANGO
Kooky Cream, Petaling Jaya
The menu says it’s mango ice bowl with mango pudding cube but pretty sure there’s passion fruit in there too. This place is so popular that customers were waiting for them to open at 2pm. Within minutes, all tables were taken up. Not bad for a place that just serves desserts and drinks.
PRETTY GOOD
8th APAM BALIK KAKIGORI
KAKIYUKI @ Taman Paramount, PJ, Petaling Jaya
Creamed corn sauce, pandan kaya espuma, peanut butter drizzle and lime meringue shards. Dig in deeper into the finely shaved ice and you get more espuma, creamed corn and crushed sweet peanuts. This really does taste like apam balik, a popular street food here that is basically a pancake filled with peanuts, sugar and corn. Available for a limited time only.
9th CHOCOLATE MINT KAKIGŌRI
KAKIYUKI @ The Gardens Mall, Kuala Lumpur
“Belgium chocolate and mint sauce, brownie cubes, crushed hazelnut, maple espuma and a star-shaped chocolate cookie” Because Christmas.
10th TUB THIM KROB
Go Thai SS2, Petaling Jaya
A popular Thai dessert with water chestnut and coconut milk. A bit too much ice for my liking but still very refreshing.
11th BO BO CHA CHA ICE
Gerai Minum Weng Kee, Petaling Jaya
Bo bo cha cha, or bubur cha cha is a coconut milk dessert with taro and sweet potato cubes. Other ingredients like bananas or black eyed peas may be added as well, and it is usually served warm. Here, Aunty Peggy has made it a shaved ice dessert with gula melaka and coconut milk. I love how she’s extremely generous with the taro and sweet potato!
12th HONEY DEW LOH
K.T.Z. Food 记得食, Petaling Jaya
I mean... it’s shaved ice, honey dew purée, honey dew balls and sago. There’s no way anyone could mess this up.
13th MANGO LOH
K.T.Z. Food 记得食, Petaling Jaya
Pretty decent, although I feel the portion seems to be getting smaller. I won’t necessarily crave for this, but it’s nice to have occasionally.
