REALLY GOOD
1st 脆皮蒜香鸡 DEEP-FRIED CHICKEN WITH GARLIC
PUTIEN Holland Village, Singapore
BRIEF: “Evenly marinated chicken that is nicely crisp on the outside and abolutely tender on the inside.” SOOT’S TAKE: Must have with the restaurant’s proprietary chili sauce (an incidental finding and I think it’s proprietary because I’ve never had anything like it) which you have to ask for separately and which I would call Magic Sauce if I could.
2nd 8PC WINGS
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Elizabeth
BRIEF: “Crispy chicken wings hand battered and breaded, then tossed in your wing flavor choice.” SOOT’S TAKE: Got half in original and the other half in spicy with a tiny packet of Mardi Gras Mustard. Excellent but ridiculously overpriced.
4th NASI AYAM PENYET
PROJECT PENYEK BY ANSAR (CLUNY FOOD COURT), 1J Cluny Rd
A most satisfying meal and at a reasonable price ($6.50) compared to everything else on offer today. The sambal was excellent as were the crispy crunchies that accompanied the tender chicken thigh. My only issue with it were the random lumps of gelatinized schmaltz (really not a fan of the mouthfeel). Still, I’m glad I picked this over $10.50 century egg congee.
5th 스윗허니치킨 HONEY BUTTER CHICKEN
Chir Chir Fusion Chicken Factory 치킨이 참 맛있는 치르치르, Malaysia
Crispy boneless fried chicken chunks, potato wedges and rice cakes tossed with honey butter sauce and seasoning. Incidentally, also my first time at Chir Chir and this was a nice intro to the restaurant‘s chicken dishes. It also reminded me of honey butter chips @furflebear introduced me to a few years ago.
6th INCHI KABIN
PiringMu | Bukit Indah, Nusajaya
First time trying this. It was essentially fried chicken but infused with a unique blend of spicy flavors. I’d never had anything like it before, although I detected turmeric. It came with a really tasty, tangy sauce that reminded me of BBQ sauce, yet it also tasted a little like tamarind. But ultimately I couldn’t put my finger on what else wouldn’t gone into it. The waiter couldn’t either despite asking the chef on our behalf.
7th 虾酱鸡 PRAWN PASTE CHICKEN WINGS
Kopitown, Singapore
Hot off the wok, crispy, crunchy, tasty...
8th 虾酱鸡 PRAWN PASTE CHICKEN WINGS
Hong Kong Street Old Chun Kee Restaurant, Singapore
CRUNCH! This would make a great late night snack along with a cold 🍺
10th 2PC CHICKEN
Long John Silver's - Star Vista, Singapore
Hadn’t had this in AGES, so it was great to have it as my first meal in 9 hours and find that it was still good like it was when I was a broke student.
12th CHICKEN & SPICY CHICKEN
Long John Silver's, Singapore
My first time trying their spicy chicken which is just the regular with a spicy powder sprinkled on. I’d stick with regular in the future although the quality of their crumblies has deteriorated somewhat.
13th ORIGINAL RECIPE
KFC Sans Souci, Sans Souci
My father swears by Australia’s (or Sydney’s?) KFC, claiming they just don’t make em’ the same way [he had (and helped prepare) them during his uni days] anywhere else he’s had KFC. I wasn’t sure I tasted the difference (not that I eat KFC often enough to appreciate) but he was convinced this 6-piece box was on another level.
14th NASI AYAM PENYET
Uncle Penyet, Singapore
BRIEF: “Our Signature Smashed Fried Chicken Thigh with fragrant steamed rice! Served with our Famous Signature Sambal Belachan Chilli, Crunchy bits, Fried Tofu, Curry Gravy and Fresh Vegetables. Yummy!” SOOT’S TAKE: I didn’t want curry gravy over my rice at first but the guy persuaded me to try it and it was actually pretty good. The chicken was good too (and ginormous) but everything else was just ok, including the otak otak I added to my order.
15th AYAM GORENG
Cumi Bali Indonesian Restaurant, Singapore
“Cumi Bali's very own fried chicken.” They pride themselves on not using flour to batter their chicken and hence on not producing overly greasy fried chicken.
16th MILD TENDERS
Popeyes, Singapore
With a hot buttery biscuit, their mashed potatoes and a root beer. As far as I can taste in this combo, their biscuit is the best thing they’ve got going for them.
17th 虾酱鸡 SHRIMP PASTE CHICKEN
Yong Kee Seafood Restaurant, Singapore
AKA Har Cheong Gai. They look like a cross between tandoori and fried chicken but taste mildly of shrimp paste.
19th CHICKENJOY MEAL
Jollibee (Lucky Plaza), Singapura
Fried chicken breast with mashed potato. First time trying Jollibee.
21st TENDERS
Texas Chicken, Singapore
Got it in ORIGINAL with a HONEY-BUTTER BISCUIT™ on the side. Tenders were decent and the biscuit felt like a mini warm hug from foodland.
22nd INCHI KABIN
Chung Ling Alumni Club Restaurant, Petaling Jaya
AKA Har Cheong Gai. This was decent but it lacked the bite normally encountered in the prawn paste used to prepare the dish.
23rd KFC CAJUN HONEY WINGS
Soots Cook Nook, Private
I’d never had it and I was curious, so these happened.
24th HONEY SOY WINGS & DRUMLETS
Two Wings @ Timbre+, Singapore
They’re the result of a 12-hour marinade, pretty good but not much to write home about. It sounds like they’re meant to be nostalgic? 1970’s nostalgic...
26th SMASHED FRIED CHICKEN (AYAM PENYET)
Ayam Penyet President, Singapore
Signature smashed fried chicken. Got the breast which was a tad dry.
JUST OK
28th FRIED CHICKEN
El Velorio de la Yaya, Malaysia
Grab Food delivery from Lim Fried Chicken. It was a tad salty. Technically, KFC was her fav but they don’t deliver here.
