REALLY GOOD
1st SHOYU AHI POKE + SPICY SALMON POKE BOWL
Seattle Fish Guys, Seattle
Found a little poke of Hawaii in Seattle where they serve poke like I know it! So ono! And none of the garden salad nonsense so characteristic of poke bowls outside HI.
2nd ALOHA BOWL
Rollie Olie @ The Star Vista, Singapore
When your last meal was 21 h ago and you pay an extra $3 to upsize. #年年有鱼 🎏 Otherwise, you’re looking at: “Salmon & tuna, romaine & mixed cabbage, avocado, cucumber, tamago, purple onion, spring onion, alfalfa, flying fish roe, sesame seed, rice & classic soy sauce.”
3rd BUILD YOUR OWN POKE BOWL
POKÉ LULU, Singapore
I chose Wasabi Mayo Ahi Tuna, Original & Spicy Salmon, weird add-ons like edamame, almonds, seaweed salad, sunflower seeds and avocado on brown rice. Poké has married a salad and become, well, a poké salad.
PRETTY GOOD
4th HAWAIIAN POKÉ
Pink Fish - Jewel Changi, Singapore
“With crispy greens, avocado, sesame, chili mayonnaise & mango hot sauce.” It was nice but there were way more greens than I would’ve liked. All too soon I was left with a salad of rice, broccoli, green beans and lettuce. 😔 🍚🥦🥬
5th BUILD YOUR OWN POKE BOWL V.2
Poke Theory, Singapore
Had to use my remaining voucher before it expired. Can you find the poke? 👁 Hint: it’s marinated in citrus herb pesto. 🌱 #wherespoke
6th BUILD YOUR OWN POKE BOWL
Poke Theory, Singapore
Avocado Miso Salmon (~ a tablespoon’s worth), Spicy Garlic Sesame Tuna (also ~ a tablespoon’s worth) and a generous topping of cherry tomatoes and cucumber over brown rice. Admittedly a nice and wholesome change from what I usually eat, but pricey and deceiving for what you’re getting: A Salad Bowl with Poke Topping. I guess it was a poke bowl after all. In theory...
7th ALOHA POKE
Rollie Olie @ The Star Vista, Singapore
Another crummy appetite day and it’s aloha everything these days... Salmon & tuna, mesclun, avocado, cucumber, tamago, purple onion, lime, alfalfa, flying fish roe, spring onion, sesame seed & soy sauce
8th YUZU BLISS
Rollie Olie @ The Star Vista, Singapore
My appetite wasn’t great and yet I had to eat something. None of the traditionally appetizing foods appealed, yet the idea of eating something wholesome-tasting wasn’t entirely off-putting. And so...I finally entered this place for the first time, 3 years after its inception and so...this poke bowl of salmon, tuna, mesclun, avocado, cucumber, hibiscus apple, orange, chives, sesame seeds & yuzu sauce. I didn’t taste much of the yuzu but I think it’d tide me through the next 12 hours.
JUST OK
9th SHOYU SALMON POKE BOWL
Haakon Superfoods and Juice, Singapore
BRIEF: “Salmon sashimi, shoyu sauce with citrus and hint of wasabi, shredded carrot, onsen egg, pineapple, cucumber, mango, tomato, wakame seaweed, nori, brown rice & mesclun.” SOOT’S TAKE: The whole affair was really watered down (or was it waterlogged?), leading to a soggy and flavor-compromised experience 😖 NOTE TO SELF: Avoid rice/poke bowls with mango, canned pineapple +/- drenched seaweed.
NOT FOR ME
10th SPICY TUNA POKE BOWL
aloha poké , Singapore
🥵🥵🥵 My nose ran from start to finish and really took away from the poke. I didn’t think the salad leaves and pineapple were good accompaniments either. Anyway, it was good to spend the voucher.
