AMAZING
1st ARROZ CON POLLO
La Tolteca Authentic Mexican Cuisine, Portage
This is the pinnacle of Mexican cuisine. It is a gold mine of a location. Everything is truly perfect with this dish. Incredible rice, incredibly flavorful seasoned chicken, the BEST queso sauce I’ve ever tasted, and served with a steamed packet of tortillas! Words cannot articulate how absolutely incredible this platter is.
2nd EMPANADA VARIETY PLATTER
La Masa Empanada Bar, Milwaukee
20+ varieties of gooey baked empanadas ordered a la carte depending on your vibe. All of the varieties are equally good in their own way!! Not too doughy, they’ve achieved the perfect ratio of filling to dough, packed with incredibly authentic and unique flavors. (Note: these are Argentinian empanadas, they are sorted under Mexican platters solely for organizational purposes)
3rd QUESABIRRIA TACOS
Asadito, Chicago
Excellent cheese between corn tortilla shells, the birria is very flavorful and the consomé is very savory, worth dipping every bite!!
4th CHICKEN ENCHILADAS
Tellos Grill & Cafe, Port Washington
Incredibly tasty, the absolute best and most authentic Mexican in the area! Enchiladas Toluca (red sauce), such a rich sauce and great cheese!
5th CHICKEN QUESADILLA
Romero’s Taco Truck, Wauwatosa
My goodness what a quesadilla! The hot salsa really made this shine, but the juicy and tender chicken melded in with the heaping amount of Mexican cheese made this impossible to put down! A must grab food truck!
REALLY GOOD
6th QUESO BIRRIA TACOS
Bocadillos Food Truck, 53066
Amazing crunch on the shells, very flavorful and tender meat, and the gooey cheese with the consomé just delivers here on everything you’d ask of a birria taco.
7th QUESABIRRIA TACOS
Pico's Tacos and Cerveza, Racine
A super savory birria taco with excellent flavor from the meat and consomé, where I only wish there was a touch more cheese to go inside of these really great crunchy birria tacos!
8th PORK EMPANADA
Lola's Empanadas, West Allis
A super soft empanada with al pastor pork and mozzarella, very juicy and tender, and complimented well by their salsa!
9th BIRRIA TACOS
Mexi-Cali Grill, Milwaukee
These birria tacos do everything right and nail the crunchy shells, but the meat could have used a bit more moisture and salt, though it was still tender. The consomé cost extra which was annoying.
10th CHICKEN ENCHILADAS ROJAS
Guanajuato Mexican Restaurant, Milwaukee
The chicken is SO tender and juicy, truly incredible flavors here. The tortillas left something be to desired though, it’s really the only complaint on these.
PRETTY GOOD
11th 3 CHEESE CHICKEN FLATBREAD
Taco Bell, Saukville
So many types of cheese (sauces) bring out an abundance of flavors from the seasoned chicken. Grab some salsa to help add some moisture to the flatbread though, and it will really round out the flavors here!
12th CHICKEN TACO
Romero’s Taco Truck, Wauwatosa
Very tender and juicy chicken, nicely seasoned. The tortillas were a bit soggy which brought the experience down, would have liked some toast or crunch there, but a great taco nonetheless!
13th CHICKEN ENCHILADAS
La Loma, Denver
With an incredibly rich and robust flavor in the red sauce, it really carries the shortcomings elsewhere. The chicken was very juicy and tender, but was plain and unseasoned (Mexican spices where are you??). Cheese broiled atop the enchiladas would have been very welcome for a touch of salt to blend with the richness of the red sauce. The rice was fine, a bit different than standard restaurant rices. Beans were good and par for the course.
JUST OK
14th CHICKEN QUESADILLA
Taco Bell, Saukville
A perfectly fine chicken quesadilla for a pinch, but prone to edges being only tortilla without filling. Definitely aided by having some taco sauce packets with the order.
15th CANTINA CHICKEN CRISPY TACO
Taco Bell, Saukville
The shell just didn’t have enough crunch or flavor to help this out, but the insides definitely tasted great with the blend of chicken, Mexican seasonings, and cheese. A fine attempt for a fast taco.
