REALLY GOOD
1st ONDE ONDE GELATO
Butterknife Folk, Singapore
A special at the recent Kranji Countryside Farmers Market. A good gelato version of a local snack, this gelato was coconuty and full of deep gula melaka flavours. Hiding below is the blueberry mint, which was zingy & refreshing.
2nd NYONYA KUEH
Peranakan Khek, Singapore
Assorted kueh from my favourite kueh place. Everything is hand made. Kueh kosui is so soft, while the bulan is uniquely filled with melon seeds. Putugal has mashed bananas while salat has a perfectly eggy pandan topping.
3rd MATCHA AND HOUJICHA SOFT SERVE
Takashimaya Department Store, Singapore
Tsujirihei-Honten has a pop up booth at Takashimaya. This soft serve was really intense. Strong green tea & roasted tea flavours here. Really good, wish they would set up permanently in Singapore!
4th PASTEL DE TRES LECHES CON CAJETA
El Cardenal, Ciudad de México
Three-milk cake with sweetened milk, milk curd, Mexican caramel and a dash of rum. We were so full from our mains but ordered this upon the waiter’s recommendation. Very good, moist cake with a smooth milky aftertaste. Only criticism was that it was a tad too sweet.
5th INFINITE HAPPINESS GELATO
Butterknife Folk, Singapore
This was a triple yakult flavour - grape yakult, orange yakult & green apple yakult. It was light and refreshing. Not too sweet either. Thumbs up.
PRETTY GOOD
6th GREEK YOGURT WITH HONEY
BAKALAKI Greek Taverna, Singapore
A lighter dessert of Greek yogurt with honey & walnuts. Clean & simple.
7th MANGO
Jardin Secreto, San Miguel de Allende
Mango picante. Mexican style with lots of chili powder, salt & lime juice on top. Interesting to try, but I prefer my mangos unadorned.
8th PISTACHIO ICE CREAM
Nieves Artesanales, CDMX
Random find on a hot afternoon in CDMX. Not bad, but nothing to rave about.
10th MOONCAKE GELATO
Butterknife Folk, Singapore
Another novelty flavour here for the upcoming Mid Autumn festival. Imagine mooncake in a gelato form. Tasted very much like the real thing, salted egg bits and all.
JUST OK
11th DESSERT
Night Market Street Food, Luang Prabang
Traditional Lao dessert, forgot to ask it’s name. Sticky and chewy made with some starchy flour, kinda like our local kueh.
12th NYONYA KUEH
Baba Chews Bar and Eatery, Singapore
The kueh dardar in the foreground (pandan crepe rolled with gula-Melaka drenched coconut) was my favourite. The rest were lackluster.
13th FRIED MILK
San Cristóbal Paladar, La Habana
A little something sweet to end the evening. Would have been better if the milk was more wobbly instead of a congealed texture.
14th CHICKEN RICE GELATO
Butterknife Folk, Singapore
A special flavour for national day. I’ll be honest, it was a bit weird for me! It had all the flavours though, the rice, soy sauce, garlic chili and chicken flavour.
15th KUEH LAPIS
Baba Chews Bar and Eatery, Singapore
Indonesian layer cake here. Sadly not moist enough.
NOT FOR ME
16th CAKES & BROWNIES
Night Market Street Food, Luang Prabang
Was surprised to find “western” desserts at the local night market in Luang Prabang. Tried the chocolate peanut brownie which was unfortunately dry and lacking in chocolate flavour.
