AMAZING
1st 荔枝乌龙茶 LYCHEE OOLONG TEA
Spring Court - Celebrating Singaporean Chinese Cuisine Since 1929, Singapore
I love how clean-tasting this is. It’s oolong gently kissed with hints of lychee, neither of which overpowers the other.
REALLY GOOD
2nd 烏龍茶 OOLONG TEA
New Shanghai Melbourne Central, Melbourne
Nothing like a warm cuppa to make everything right after a 10 km hike in 40 deg weather.
3rd 香片茶 JASMINE TEA
NUSS-The Scholar, Singapore
Fuller bodied than any other jasmine tea I’ve had at any Chinese restaurant in recent memory.
4th 御茶糯米普洱 IMPERIAL TEA GLUTINOUS RICE PU'ER TEA
Jasons Deli ION Orchard, Singapore
My first purchase of glutinous rice tea (at the bargain corner) but not my first taste of it from a tea workshop I attended 8 years ago in Chinatown. I still like it and I still taste the pandan that nobody else in that tea group could taste or understand like I did.
5th 茶王 KING TEA
Restoran Foo Hing Dim Sum, Puchong
To round out the dim sum experience and because King Tea seems non-existent in SG.
6th HARNEY & SONS PARIS TEA
Park's Bagels, Petaling Jaya
brief:”FRUITY BLACK TEA WITH BERGAMOT OIL.” soot’s take: As described. A lovely, fruitier version of Earl Grey in a cute as a cottage teapot.
7th TEH
Restaurant S Double One, Kuala Lumpur
Black tea with dairy just the way I like it: perfect balance between sweet and bitter.
8th 1837 BLACK TEA
SQ 021, Newark - Singapore
BRIEF: “TWG Tea's renowned signature tea, 1837 Black is a unique blend of black tea with notes of fruits and flowers from the Bermuda triangle which leaves a lingering aftertaste of ripe berries, anise, and caramel. A timeless classic.” SOOT’S TAKE: I can’t confirm the provenance of the fruits & flowers but it is a delicious caramelly tea I’d repeat on a day that needed improving.
9th 1837 BLACK TEA
SQ 28, SIN - SEA
BRIEF: “TWG Tea’s renowned timeless classic. This is a unique blend of black tea with fruity and floral tones which leaves a lingering taste of ripe berries and caramel.” SOOT’S TAKE: Everything in the description is true to my experience of this tea.
10th TWININGS® RUSSIAN CARAVAN
Woolworths Top Ryde, Ryde
BRIEF: “Inspired by century old tales. Russian Caravan received its name from the tea camel caravans travelling to Russia in the 19th century. During the journey, the tea absorbed the aroma of the campfires resulting in a smooth, mellow tea with a subtle smokiness. It will warm your heart and relax your soul.” SOOT’S TAKE: I rarely encounter Russian Caravan tea anywhere so I was excited to purchase a $2 box of 10 bags from TWININGS to try. I now wish I’d gotten more than 1 box or that there’d been a larger box to purchase.
11th YUZU PEAR BLOSSOM ユズペアーブロッサム
Fruit Paradise 和 Cafe, Singapore
Refreshing fruit mixed black tea (it looks mightily green to me). Apparently high in vitamin C and rich in antioxidants. It was good enough for me that it complimented my fruit tart.
12th ROJI MOMOTARO ろじももたろう
Foodie Market Place, Singapore
Japanese Sencha from Kagoshima Prefecture with White Peach and Peach Blossoms. I had to have this iced because it was such a hot day. Refreshing it was! 🍑
13th CASCARA
Slickshots, Singapore
Tangy, herbal, fruity, grassy (in a freshly cut hay kind of way). Basically like nothing I’ve ever had before although I can’t help but be transported to a 🛖 that I’ve never been inside of. 😳 Would repeat if and when I feel a great need to be comforted.
14th TEH
Cluny Food Court, Singapore
Went real well with the ayam penyet. Hot tea just makes everything better.
15th GRYPHON® TEA COMPANY STRAITS CHAI
Novena Heart Centre, Singapore
“… a robust brew of Sumatran Black Tea with cardamom, anise, cinnamon, black pepper and orange.” I’m generally not crazy about spiced drinks but this tea was very delicately spiced and balanced. I enjoyed it with the cornflake chaat.
16th CHINESE TEA
Peach Garden, Singapore
I think this was jasmine and I liked that it wasn’t ridiculously dilute.
17th GRYPHON® TEA COMPANY MOGAMBO
Novena Heart Centre, Singapore
Tangy, juicy and refreshing is generally what I’m getting from this delicious tea, but of course, if one were a tea poet, we’d be on a different plane altogether, so I’ll indulge the ones @ Gryphon® accordingly: “Sweet summer apples and passionfruit all lovingly blended with South African honeybush, and a tangy touch of pomegranate flowers for that addictive sweet and sour contrast.” ☺️
19th TEH
Kopitiam, Singapore
Part of the sandwich set. I appreciated that it wasn’t too sweet despite the addition of condensed milk.
20th JAPANESE BARLEY TEA
Hamburg Steak Keisuke, Singapore
Cold Japanese barley tea for waiting customers.
22nd 五行茶 MAN FU YUAN SPECIAL FIVE ELEMENTS BLEND
Man Fu Yuan Restaurant, Singapore
Exclusive to Man Fu Yuan, this tea features a blend of ingredients, each representing the elements of fire, earth and wood, brewed with water in a metal pot. Floral notes largely dominated by osmanthus.
23rd BARLEY TEA
Bab-Muk-Ja Korean Restaurant, Singapore
Meant to enjoy a bowl of mee siam today at my favorite Malay place, but it was unexpectedly closed for the year. Who knew that would lead to the discovery of this gem of a restaurant? It’s operated by a Singaporean man and his Korean wife and daughter who man the kitchen, and the food is down to earth and tasty. I’ve not enjoyed Korean food so much since AKL.
24th 糯米香普洱 IN HOUSE PU ER TEA
Go Noodle House 有间面馆 @ JB City Square, Johor Bahru
With the fragrance of glutinous rice which somehow reminds me of the fragrance of pandanus leaves.
25th 冻顶乌龙茶 DONG DING OOLONG
Din Tai Fung 鼎泰豐 at Pavilion KL, Kuala Lumpur
My first time trying Dong Ding Oolong, which suggests the tea comes from a mountain called Icy Peak. I liked the roasty, toasty notes in this tea.
26th J.S. BLEND TEA J.S. ブレンドテイー
J.S. PANCAKE CAFE Shibuya, Shibuya City
I liked this tea so much I ordered it again and got a take-home bag of tea bags on my last day in Tokyo. 💕
27th 观音王 ANXI ROYAL TIE GUANYIN
Man Fu Yuan Restaurant, Singapore
“Widely acclaimed as the Saint of Tea, Anxi Royal Tie Guan Yin is the finest oolong harvested in Spring in the Anxi region in Fujian, China. Each tea leaf is handpicked to ensure harvests of young buds. Its profile is smooth, crisp and light with a fragrance reminiscent of Chinese orchids after rain. It is known for its cholesterol-reducing and detoxification properties.” Even if you weren’t seduced by the sales talk, this tea was fragrant and v. drinkable.
PRETTY GOOD
28th COMPLIMENTARY TEA
Suzhou Industrial Park, Su Zhou Shi
Complimentary tea as you wait outside 眉州东坡 for a table.
29th
Suzhou Industrial Park, Su Zhou Shi
At a restaurant in the mall called 眉州东坡 I don’t know what tea this was but it was complimentary too.
30th
蟹叁實, 1281号-2 邮政编码: 200061
Complimentary and refillable. Unsure what kind of tea but it was moderately sweet.
