HONEY CHAR SIEW RICE
Old Ipoh Cafe, Kuala Lumpur
The honey BBQ pork had good marination, with a nice caramelized, sticky sweet coating. However I found it a bit on the lean side. A different cut with some fat in it would have made this almost perfect. The rice here is nicely done, as is the chilli dip. Both are very important components when it comes to char siew, siew yoke or chicken rice, so props to Oh Ipoh for getting it right. And of course, the Ipoh taugeh (bean sprouts) must have special mention. Shorter and fatter than the regular taugeh, Ipoh taugeh is reputed to be the best taugeh grown in the country with their crunchy texture and sweet flavour. Put all these together and you’ll have a pretty darn good meal.
