REALLY GOOD
1st SPICY GANGJUNG BURGER
Incredible Chicken & Burger @ Timbre+, Singapore
Flavorful, and just all around tasty. The batter was still crispy when I bit into it. Sinus-clearing too.
2nd SPICY CHICKEN WITH APPLE SLAW BURGER
McDonald's, Singapore
Spicy Chicken with Apple Slaw: My first time trying something outside my cheeseburger/quarter pounder/McChicken routine. This is one of the burgers in their atas collection. In Singapore, atas literally means upstairs, but in this context, it means posh. This is a juicy chicken patty sandwiched between red apple slaw, wild rocket, white cheddar cheese (wait really?), creamy black pepper mayo sauce, and a soft semolina bun. This was a fiery number alright! Nose running at the moment.
3rd EGGCELLENT MCSPICY®
McDonald's Metropolis, Singapore
Crafted specially for local tastebuds, this is a fiery hot, thick and juicy cutlet of chicken thigh and drum + fried egg on a bed of lettuce between toasted sesame seed buns. Nose running...
4th KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN BURGER
Soots Cook Nook, Private
So those burger buns were for a reason: an opportunity to start ridding the fridge of Gochujang. The outcome of which involved lashings of sticky chili sauce over double-fried chicken over a kimchi-style slaw over the base of one of them burger buns. The slaw involved a fair bit of prepwork, but everything else was easy peasy.
PRETTY GOOD
5th MCSPICY®
McDonald's Metropolis, Singapore
BRIEF: “If you’re big on hot chilli spice, this is the sandwich for you. A thick, juicy cutlet of chicken thigh sits fiery hot on a bed of crunchy lettuce between toasted sesame seed buns – shiok!” SOOT’S TAKE: Made my nose water alright 🥵
7th NYT COOKING’S SMASHED AVOCADO-CHICKEN BURGER
Soots Cook Nook, Private
Happy Burger Day. I had my reservations about making chicken patties because I’ve either found them to be too dry or too bland. But these are quite flavorful with the addition of warm, peppery ginger, garlic, herbaceous cilantro, scallions, buttery mashed avocado(!) and a bright soy-kewpie mayo dressing. Served on fresh out of the oven brioche buns with butter lettuce, and it don’t hurt to top it up with somemore sliced avocado, cilantro and extra citrusy soy mayo.
8th HJK BURGER
Sinpopo Brand, Singapore
Their “‘Har Jeong Kai’ is a whole chicken leg marinated overnight in authentic ‘har jeong’ and then battered with a special light flaky crust. Served in a warm soft glazed bun with house wasabi mayonnaise.” This is certainly one to share as I know I’d be quickly bored out of my mind ploughing through hunk after hunk of fried chicken without much else for variety (short of the lettuce and bun). They could also have been more generous with the wasabi mayonnaise.
9th CHICKEN & HASH BURGER
Kaizen Coffee, Subang Jaya
Pretty tasty burger of minced chicken patty, hash brown, cheese, rocket & mustard mayo. Fries were pretty good too.
